Review so let's bust one myth right from the off then - although one that Apple never promised in the first place. The iPhone 5C is not a cheap, budget device - it's a slightly cheaper offering compared to the premium, metal clad iPhone 5S which launched alongside this polycarbonate-clad phone.
Thanks to price cuts the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One M8, Nokia Lumia 930 and Sony Xperia Z2 are all around the same price, if not cheaper than the less feature packed iPhone 5C.
One way Apple has managed to keep the cost of the 5C down slightly is ditching the glass and aluminium body seen on every handset since the iPhone 4, and welcoming back the brazen use of polycarbonate last seen on the iPhone 3GS. IPhone 5c is still a bit expensive but is still a budget phone overall.

The all new Moto G is, in short, a game-changer. We now live in a world where you can buy a brand new smartphone with no service contract for $179 that is sleeker, sexier and more exciting than make handset on the market that cost $400, $500 or even more. With the new Moto G, Motorola has taken its best-selling smartphone of all time and made it better in every way, inside and out. With the new Moto G, which shares the same exact name as its predecessor, here’s what we’re looking at on paper: a 5-inch 720p HD display, a quad-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor, stereo speakers, an 8-megapixel camera, 8GB or 16GB of storage, microSD support up to 32GB, a 2,070 mAh battery and Android 4.4 KitKat, though the phone will be upgraded to Android L later this year following its release. Android KitKat is smoother than you think on this budget handset. It doesn’t fly around as quickly as a leading flagship phone like the Galaxy Note 4 or LG G3, but it’s more than smooth enough to get the job done with no issues.

The $250 Idol 3 even looks like a Nexus phone. Its gentle curves, slim 0.29-inch profile and beautiful high-res 5.5-inch display with full HD resolution feel like the natural evolution of the Nexus 4's industrial design. The Idol 3's plastic is brushed to appear as if it's made of metal. It certainly no Galaxy S6, but it's not flimsy, either. The phone's also really light. For the most part, the Idol 3 runs a near stock version of Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. Unlike other phones, Alcatel didn't modify the user interface in any relevant way. I actually like the Fisher-Price look to the icons and the animation changes — they're playful and approachable. The phone is speedy and while I did notice a few hiccups during my testing, they didn't impact usage. (Every phone freezes up every once in a while.) All you need to know is this phone is butter-smooth. The 2,910 milliamp-hour (mAh) battery is also a top performer — it lasted a full day and sometimes a day and a half on a single charge.

The OnePlus One offers Samsung Galaxy S5 performance for less than half the price. If that doesn't make it attractive it also has a customisable OS and a 1080p display. There are a few downsides, but overall the OnePlus One is amazing value for money. Here is a device that rivals the HTC One M8 and the Samsung Galaxy S5 for raw specs, but at a cost of just £179, $249. That's around half the price of those aforementioned big hitters. It can even go toe-to-toe with some of the newer flagship devices, such as the HTC One M9, the Galaxy S6 and the Nexus 6. Initially you were able to order a 16GB model for £179, $249, or £219 $299 for the 64GB option.
Price: 16GB £179, $249 and 64GB £219 $299.

The Asus Zenfone 2 fills an interesting niche as an Android phone full of deep customizations, yet one that sells for half the price of similarly sized phablets.
Typically, Android tinkers who want to invest a lot of time into customizing their phone also have to pay full price for a flagship. But Zenfone 2 turns that concept on its meditating head.
At $300 unlocked (about £210, AU$408) and now available in the US, it's a bargain for a 5.5-inch display that's as big as a the LG G4 and iPhone 6 Plus, and specs that include an speedy Intel processor and 4GB of RAM.
There's an even cheaper $200 (about £139, AU$272) model with a slower Intel chip and just 2GB of RAM, but the 4GB version is the one that's going to last you some time – if it holds up.
Price: $300
